5 Reasons to Indulge with a Healthy Breakfast
We all know that breakfast is supposedly the most important meal of the day – but do you know why? I’m on a quest to eat – and live – healthier, more organic, natural, REAL foods. I teeter-totter with my breakfast eating habits.
Some weeks I have a green smoothie every single morning (easy blend up frozen fruit, cup of almond milk, kale, bee pollen, hemp seeds, etc.) and other weeks I don’t eat a thing. One thing’s for sure, when I don’t eat breakfast I’m pretty much starving come lunch time and I notice I’m more tired during the day. Coincidental? Not entirely sure so I did some research.
Here’s my 5 reasons we should each indulge on a healthy breakfast every single day.
Reason #5 -> Our energy level.
Breakfast gives our bodies nutrition and substance. This is where our energy comes from. People who do not eat breakfast have considerably less energy than people who do. We eat dinner then sleep through the night (that’s eight or more hours without eating). Our bodies need to be nourished first thing in the morning so we have the energy we need for the day.
Reason #4 -> Our concentration.
Studies have shown that adults who eat a healthy breakfast are more efficient during their workday than those who do not. People who do not eat breakfast often have a hard time concentrating.
Reason #3 -> Our mood.
Hunger can cause mood swings and irritability, so can running on empty. Your body is lacking something and this affects your whole system. People who do eat breakfast tend to be much less irritable than those who do not. They tend to be in a better mood.
Reason #2 -> Our weight.
Missing breakfast often leads to overeating at some point later on in the day, usually snacking on unhealthy foods, which are high in calories and fat. You may also become over hungry mid-morning and by lunchtime could end up eating twice as much than if you had eaten a healthy breakfast that released energy slowly throughout the day. I definitely feel this when I don’t eat breakfast. I’m rushing off to lunch early.
According to WebMD: Eating breakfast is a daily habit for the “successful losers” who belong to The National Weight Control Registry. These people have maintained a 30-pound (or more) weight loss for at least a year, and some as long as six years. “Most — 78% — reported eating breakfast every day, and almost 90% reported eating breakfast at least five days a week – which suggests that starting the day with breakfast is an important strategy to lose weight and keep it off,” says James O. Hill, PhD, the Registry’s co-founder and director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
Reason #1 -> Our nutrition.
Breakfast is a great opportunity to eat nutritious foods like whole grains, fruits, and dairy products to ensure you and your children are getting all of the vitamins and minerals you need. This is the perfect time of the day to give your busy the right kind of fuel with high quality, organic, real food.
Here’s some quick healthy, good for you breakfasts:
- Green smoothie (combine almond milk with kale and some frozen fruit, pop in a glass and take it along with you on your commute to work)
- Soy yogurt with fresh fruit or organic granola
- Whole grain organic cereal with almond or soy milk
- Oatmeal with raisins or fresh fruit
- Whole wheat English muffin (or slice of homemade English muffin bread) with organic peanut butter
- Hard boiled egg (made the nigh before) and whole grain toast
So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to take control of your food not let it control you – and feel better in the process.
