I even had turtles named Kirin and Sapporo though I lost their photos with one of my old hard drives (sadface)

Sigh.

I’m kinda. Maybe. A sushi freak.

So imagine my utter glee when hunnie and I wanted to try making sushi for the first time as our Christmas Eve dinner. I nearly fucking died.

Not only was the sushi to die for but I was pleasantly surprised, it was way easier to make than I expected.

How to Make Sushi at Home Directions

Here’s what we did. First we bought one of these sushi box kits that come with the bamboo mat, some sushi rice and vinegar and nori. We bought another package of nori and rice, you know just in case one of us messed up a roll lol

It’s really important when you make sushi at home that you buy sushi quality fish from your local fish guy. For the love of god don’t buy the crap from the grocery store. Keep that shit nicely refrigerated until you are ready to assemble your rolls.

When you are ready, about an hour before you want to dine make your sushi rice. Follow the instructions on the package but basically when you are done add in the vinegar and sugar and you’ll see why it’s called sticky rice lol

Let this sit aside until it’s cool this took about 30 minutes for me.

Now you can get out the rest of your ingredients. I cut up some thin sticks of cucumber, sliced up some avocado, and pulled a container of cream cheese from the fridge.

Now you can pull out your fish, salmon and tuna for us, and slice that up to prepare your ingredients. I also added some smoked salmon because I wanted to make one of my favorite rolls, the bagel roll.

To assemble your sushi roll. Lay out your bamboo mat, lay a piece of nori seaweed on the mat. The shiny side should always point to the outside, make sure the rough side is where you are placing the sushi rice. Next, wet your fingers and stick some rice onto the the nori sheet leaving about 1/4 inch on all sides around.

Like so…

Now you simply lay your desired ingredients on the bottom third of the nori sheet. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo (doh!) so here is one from Google Images ;-) How high tech is this drawing?

Ok Ok Ok onto the next step, you use the mat and gently roll up the sushi roll.  This is way easier seen then explained, so here’s a great wiki link to step by step videos on rolling it up, in 3 different ways.

Once you have your roll, you slice it into 6 pieces.

Serve with pickled ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce.

Here is what my 2 roll types looked like finished. Not bad for my first time! AND OMG THEY TASTED DIVINE!
